Benidorm teachers cry out against “abandonment” educational on the second day of indefinite strike
About a thousands of teachers of the majority of the public centers in Benidorm – according to sources from the IES Mediterrània – have concentrated today, May 12, in the Plaza de SS.MM. The Kings of Spain of Benidorm, under the motto ‘For a dignified public education’, in the second day of indefinite teachers’ strike of the Valencian Community. At 10:30 a.m., the local educational community met in front of the City Hall, to make visible what they consider a “limit situation”.
During the event, a manifest unitary in which the impact of the strike has been highlighted. According to the organizing groups, the monitoring in the Marina Baixa region yesterday exceeded 80%, a figure that contrasts with the official data of the Generalitat, which placed the average monitoring index in the Valencian Community at 50.12% during the first day. According to the City Council, of the 650 IES teachers, 325 supported the strike, concluding that there was 50% follow-up.
Call from teachers to improve Benidorm’s infrastructure
In the manifesto, the organizers of Benidorm focus their complaints on the “abandonment” of the centers and remember that the Pla Edificant contemplated actions worth 12.8 million euros in eight local centers, projects that remain blocked.

- IES Mediterrània: deficiencies in the fire protection system, heating and electrical network.
- CEIP Vasco Núñez de Balboa: closure of spaces for security reasons.
- CEIP Ausiàs March: delay in accessibility and modernization works.
The unions maintain their eight main demands, which include the Immediate reactivation of works in Benidorm, the ratio reduction and the increase in staff to address diversity.
The strike maintains its character indefinite and, according to the Generalitat, the first day passed normally in transportation and school cafeteria services. The conflict is now waiting for both parties to resume a path of negotiation that allows unblocking the situation in the classrooms.
Minimum services in the Valencian Community
From the Department of Education, Culture and Universities it is insisted that the “hand is still outstretched” to the unions. The regional secretary of Education, Daniel McEvoy, recalled that they have remained 29 meetings with the union organizations since the beginning of the course and has regretted that three of them left the last Sectoral Table. “The door has not been ajar, it has been wide open”, stated the regional secretary.
One of the points of greatest tension in this beginning of the strike has been the establishment of the minimum services, especially with regard to student evaluation. In this sense, the Generalitat has reported that the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) has rejected the precautionary suspension of said minimum services proposed by the CSIF and CCOO unions.
McEvoy has defended the need to preserve the rights of students, especially those in the 2nd year of Baccalaureate: “They are young people who have been working for the PAU for two years. They have one of the most important moments of their academic career ahead of them and they deserve to reach it in the best possible conditions”, he pointed out. With this judicial endorsement, the Department guarantees that all students will be able to be objectively evaluated despite the strike.
